One of the oldest natural breeds in North America, the Maine Coon is generally regarded as a native of the State of Maine (The Maine Coon is the official native Maine State cat). A native American longhaired cat the Maine Coon was recognised as a specific breed in Maine where they were held in high regard for their mousing talents. Through natures own breeding program, this breed has developed into a sturdy cat ideally suited to the harsh winters and varied seasons of the region. Maine Coons develop slowly, not reaching full size until between the ages of 3 and 5. Males reaching between 13 to 18 pounds and females between 9 and 12 pounds. They are nicknamed "Gentle Giants" as they are the biggest of the domestic cats, who remain "kittenish" throughout their lives and have "dog like" traits, like playing "fetch" for example.
