Emergency & Critical Care 5th Vets Now Annual Congress
Prof Stuart Carmichael BVMS MVM DSAO MRCVS
Stuart's main interest is in the management of Osteoarthritis in dogs and the consideration of current treatment options.
His team currently have two projects studying the effects of weight loss in overweight and obese dogs with osteoarthritis and the positive clinical response to this in the absence of other interventions. One of the challenges this raises is the measurement of improvement and the team are currently studying tools including force plate analysis to achieve this.
He is also interested in the surgical modification of arthritic dogs and has a well established joint replacement programme. His team are investigating the benefits of this compared to conservative management.
Stuart is also involved in developing a structured programme for successful management of osteoarthritis in veterinary practice, based on a multi-modal approach to the problem using assessment tools and outcome measurement.
This is being validated in the University's arthritis clinic and training programmes are being developed to allow practices to employ it. Feedback data will be used to study the effects of different interventions in the field.
